Lisboa

We're back from a few days in Lisboa, where we had a great time. So many nice things to see, like Jeronimos Monastery, Torre de Belem, Ponte 25 de Abril (or twin-Golden Gate as Vincent calls it), Parque das Nações, Ponte Vasco da Gama, Castello São Jorge, etc., etc. Obviously 5 days of continously watching crappy old buildings was a bit too much for Vincent, but fortunately this year the Dakar rally starts in Lisboa, so lot's of car stuff to see as well.

When we moved from Rijswijk to Zoetermeer, we first lived at Vendelpad 24. So when we went for a big bikeride, we stopped by at the Vendelpad to show Vincent.

Bath

During a business trip to Bath, there was plenty of time to check out the city, which actually is very pretty. There was also an opportunity to see Stonehenge, which is close by. The Stones are interesting but not quite as impressive as, say, the Pyramids.

Italy: Achensee

On our way back from Italy home again, we spend a view days with Thomas and Steffi on their vacation address in Achensee, Austria. Quite a contrast, from buzzing Italy with it's terra cotta and yellow colors of Tuscany, to serene Austria with it's quite mountain areas with green grass and blue lakes with waterfalls. At any moment we were expecting Julie Andrews to start dancing around the pastures singing her well known Sound of Music tunes.

Italy: Siena

A typical winding road through the characteristic colorfull hills of curvy Tuscany, took us via Valletta and San Gimignano to Siena. After visiting the cityhall, situated on supposedly one of the largest piazzas in Europe, we went to Catedrale di Santa Maria. Like most other cathedrals it is more commonly referred to as the Duomo. It is quite special because of the black and white marble striping, used both inside and outside throughout the whole building, which really sets it apart. After burning candles for Opas and Omas, we also climbed the tower, to be rewarded with the typical Siena rooftop view.

Italy: Maranello

If you ask Vincent for the highlight of the vacation, you'll get a very clear answer: Ferrari! We actually planned not to go there, because the area of Modena and Maranello was too far from where we were, about 3.5 hours. But we were easily bribed by Vincent's persistent convincing skills. But it was worthwhile. The beautifully recently redesigned museum had everything: current F1 cars, classic GTO's and Dino's, extreme supercar Enzo, the older F40 and F50, the more recent F612 Scaglietti, F360 Modena, F430 Spyder, and even a brand new F599 GTB Fiorano. Of course Vincent had to enlarge his already respectable collection of remote control cars to include a F430 Spyder, hand selected in person from Maranello.

Italy: Firenze

We had to see Florence, eventhough it was quite a long drive, almost 3 hours. Brunelleschi's Dome on Piazza del Duomois is a beautifully architected building. The famous scultpure of David by Michelangelo is on Piazza della Signori, in front of the historic cityhall. Well, sort of, it's a replica, the original is now in a museum. We saw the Ponte Vecchio as well, which is nice provided that you view it with a 300mm telelens. The ancient historic bridge is pretty from a distance, but turns into a touristic commercial juwelery center from up close! Fortunately you can get icecream. Just bring 30 euros.

Italy: Pisa

We visited Pisa, about 1 hour north from where we were staying. Of course everybody knows the bend tower of Pisa, we have all seen it on pictures, but it's so much more impressive to see it in real live. That's always the case, like with this. And also with this. And this. Etc.

On the last day we went to Taormina to have a look at an old Greek amphi theater. It is still in use as a theater, now for modern pop concerts. When you're seated in the theater and look towards the stage and over it, you have a really amazing view over the bay with the Etna vulcano behind it.

Sicilia: Etna

They say you haven't seen Sicilia if you didn't climb Mount Etna, so of course we went to see the vulcano. We drove all around it to approach it from the Catania side. Already quite a drive in the Renault Clio along the windy roads up to the base camp. Here you can visit two pretty big craters. From there we took the cablecart to go up higher. Quite scary, and we didn't even take the open chair lift. From there an off-road SUV truck took us again higher. The view from the mountain is spectacular, while you are arounded by pitch black lava sand. Finally the guide took us for a long walk to the edge of some big craters with smoke coming out of the depth. The sand is really warm and when you dig a little you will find stones that are so hot you can barely touch them, amazing.

Hester and her famous cousins

We visited Tante Dicky again and had lot's of fun as usual. Of course it was a lot of fun when Tante Dicky was still running the Boltini Circus, but her backgarden with playpark Oud Valkeveen is just as much fun.

Hester was happy to have the opportunity to get her picture taken together with her famous cousins. Cousin Joost de Bruijn is running around the world for his Supperclub business. He found some time to meet us just after he returned from Kiev and before he goes to San Francisco, it's a tough life ;-). Joost's son Thijmen had a lot of fun playing together in the park and around the house and what were they playing: making soup!

Cousin Ferenc Lorch came by after his hockey match, he was injured so Hester had to look after him again like last time. Now wasn't that exciting, touching Ferenc' legs like so many other famous pretty girls ;-) Ferenc works as a camera man, photographer, actor, etc., he found some time for us in between his appearance in an MTV videoclip, photographying Gorbatjov with Lech Walensa and, most importantly, some nude models.

Meeting Ford Prefect!

For those of you who know about building Inter Galactic Highways through Hyperspace, drinking Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters, putting a Bable-fish in your ear, understand Vogon poetry read by Zaphod Beeblebrox, have experienced the Infinite Improbability Drive, etc., you already know that the ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is (you're not going to like it): 42. For those of you who don't have a clue what this is all about: Don't Panic. Go away now and start reading the book and find out all about the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Now that we've all read the book, we all know who Ford Prefect is, the guy who chose his name because he thought that automobiles were the dominant lifeform on Earth, and that the name "Ford Prefect" would be inconspicuous.

Finally you will understand our excitement when Vincent and I went to an oldtimer car show in our own familiar Dorpsstraat downtown old Zoetermeer. Because what happened: we met the real "Ford Prefect" in person! I had to restrain Vincent from buying it, because it was even for sale. Imagine him driving that car, they would all point at him and say: You sass that hoopy Vincent? Now there's a frood who really knows where his towel is!

Pyramide

Pyramide

We're back from an excellent holiday in Egypt. The weather was great, warm but not hot, no sweater needed in the evenings. There were a number of pools for swimming without sand in your pants. The secluded beach was great for building sandcastles and doing salsa dancing. The resort was situated in a bay area with a coral reef only a few meters off the coast with a 50 meters pier to take you to the other side of the reef for great snorkling and duikelen. The numerous bars had all kinds of drinks, especially the Cuba Libre with lot's of local rum was put to the volume test. The different restaurants had pizza's and omlet made to order, barbecued meat, fresh fish everyday and most amazing of all: they had great rice, almost as good as in Indonesia! All of this served with first class service by our personal waiter Tarek. The animation team was great, especially Tatjana & Svetlana and their mini mini skirts made it quite obvious that the animation was not only for kids ;-) But the highpoint was of course our trip to Cairo. We went to the Gizeh plateau with the great Pyramids and the Sphinx, had a camel ride, ate lunch in a boat restaurant on the river Nile, visited the Egyptian museum with Tutankhamon, the hieroglyphs, mummies, etc., and saw Cairo's old Medina city center and the Citadel.

There's only one problem: Vincent now wants his own huge pyramid!

It was a lot of fun and even usefull to learn how to control your car in very difficult circumstances, like when your driving on the extreme wet or even on ice. Amazing how applying the correct breaking, steering and throttle techniques at the right time can help you control a car that seems completely out of control.

Surprise Porsche!!!

Surprise Porsche!!!

The surprises aren't over yet: today daddy got to drive a Porsche! First a 996 Carrera 4 Tiptronic, limited Millenium edition of which only 911 were built! Later a 993 Carrera 2. Another surprise arranged by mama where Noppie and Kaatje were involved in the plot. Roy said he was going to come around to help fix some stuff around the house. First daddy took me for a bike ride around the lake early in the morning, when the mobile phone rang. Roy was at our house already, on time which is rather suspicious, so we went home quickly. We were just home when Noppie and Kaatje rang the door bell, daddy opened the door and there was the Porsche: Very, very cool!

First daddy drove with Norbert and Geoffrey in the back to Zevenhuizen and back just to get used and feel the awesome power. Then daddy and mama went to the Rottemeren area to have lunch at Bergschenhoek on the lakeside. Then they went in the direction of Utrecht and drove to Schoonhoven along the Lek, to Oudewater and back via Gouda to Zoetermeer. And all the time there was that beautifull sounding 3.6 engine's in the back.

Afterwards we took the car back to the owner Kees, who took daddy for a spin and showed how serious driving should be done. He regularly does trackdays on the Zandvoort circuit and is working on his racing license. He accelerated flat out (remember 316bhp, 0-100 in 5.0s!) and then went full on the brakes, really incredible power.

Now Kees not only has a 996 C4 tip but also a beautiful cobalt blue 993 C2, which he offered to be driven as well. There was a surprisingly big difference between the two cars. Both of course have tremendous power, but the 996 was far more refined and sophisticated, of course it has the 5-speed tiptronic and clutchless manual. The 993 was pure, direct and raw power, clearly a real driver's car, it was the varioram version with 285bhp instead of the earlier 272bhp model. Can you imagine the tough choice he has to make every morning: 996 or 993?!

What a terrific day this was, see more pictures.

Surprise Dinner

Surprise, surprise! Daddy thought he could get away with getting 40 and quitely forget about it, but no way. Very secretly, mama had arranged a dinner for daddy tonight. The execuse was that just Noppie and Kaatje were going to be there for dinner, but of course daddy isn't stupid and immediately said: yeah right, plus all the other friends. They took daddy to restaurant Bogor and there they all were: Roy & Lia, Joost & Marlies, Rob & Carla, Norbert & Karin, Eud & Petra, Robbie & Suus and Roel. It was a nice evening and in the end they decided it was time for a big match. So the Tennis guys will have to play squash against the Squash guys and the Squash guys will have to play tennis against the Tennis guys. Of course the result is clear, daddy will win ;-)

Roland Garros 2003

Roland Garros 2003

Oui, oui, oui, Paris, Paris. This year we saw Martin Verkerk play his first round match wich he only won just, having matchpoints against. At that time we didn't know yet that he would reach the finals!

Roland Garros 2002

Another Roland Garros, unfortunately with a lot of rain. Highlight of the trip this time was of course Joost having a Haagen-Dazs icecream together with Anna Kournikova ;-)

Roland Garros 2001

Paris and Tennis, excellent combination, this is the second time we went there. Luckily we were back on time, just 2 weeks later Vincent was born prematurely. If I'd known that I'd probably not have gone...

Roland Garros 2000

Roland Garros 2000

This year we tried to go to Roland Garros but we didn't manage ;-(. Hester and I went on holiday to Martinique, which is overseas French territory, which is why on our way back we had a stop over in Paris very early in the morning. There we changed our flights from Paris to Amsterdam to late in the evening, giving us almost a full day in Paris. So we tried to get Roland Garros tickets on the black market, which normally should be quite easy to do. Unfortunately, just as we arrived there the police were arresting all the ticket sellers. So all we could do was peep through the fences and have a nice lunch.
