We visited her old school and took a pictures of her sitting in the classroom (pupils all laughing of course). We also saw were tante Edith had ballet lessons and visited the old house where they used to live (sad to see how it all changed into a big mess). We also went to Zangrandi, a place where they used to get ice-cream (turned out that the current owner's aunt lives in Zoetermeer).Posted on August 14, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (1)

Cimahi
We went to Cimahi to visit grandpa's grave at the military cemetary of honour (erebegraafplaats), real impressive. We looked around in Bandung (Dad used to live here) and visited Dad's old school guided by one of the teachers (who also taught English, like Claire). We took pictures of Dad sitting in the classroom where he used to sit more than 50 years ago! We had lunch at Bogarije, a place where Dad used to go to. Finally we went back to hotel where we played tennis (ballboys included) and took a dive in the swimmingpool.Posted on August 5, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Claire, Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (0)
Bandung
Now we also had to say goodbye to the other Peilow's, which was a pity; it all went a bit too quick. We joined the group again, and left from Bogor to Bandung through the Puncak Pass (Claire's dad used to have a week-end house there ). We visited a tea plantation before we arrived at the Cipaku Indah hotel in Bandung.Posted on August 4, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Claire, Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (0)
Jakarta
We took a becak ride to the Peilow's residence again, about 10 minutes away, where we had breakfast. Then we already had to say goodbye to some of the Peilows and went to Uncle Freddy's (still in Jakarta but a 3 hours drive, traffic is a mess). He live in a gigantic 'Dallas like' house with two bathrooms, a music room, a tenniscourt, an open kitchen (and I mean open: there's just one wall missing), etc. Here we met a lot of family: Pangkei, Waney, Manday, we never saw so many relatives we didn't know. It was nice to meet Oma Non, the sister of my Mum's Dad, who raised my mother when she was still a baby. Then we had diner (of course) and went back to hotel in Bogor, joined by the Peilows (Tante Babes, Tante Rita, Lisa, Sigrid and Enrico), who also spent the night there.Posted on August 3, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (0)
Batavia
Rented a bus, driver included, who drove us from Bogor to Jakarta to meet the Peilow family: Tante Babes, Enrico, Lisa and Sigrid, who lead us through Jakarta. We visited the Jakarta harbour and the old Stadhuis of Batavia. (Dad knew this). Next we went shopping in a large shopping center where we also had something to eat. Then we went to Jalan Wijaya; Claire used to live here, but the house and the neighborhood had all changed and she didn't recognize it. Next we went to Jalan Goa where Claire used to live also and this time she got real excited because she recognized it all. The house was empty but there was a bediende and his family watching the house. They let us in so we could have a look around, which was real nice. Claire said they used to have a swimming pool which was missing. Then we visited Claire's old school and sang Burung Kaka Tua on the school yard. Finally we went to the Peilow's residence, where we met the rest of the family and (of course) had diner (enak sekali). Some of us went with Sigrid and Lisa and tante Rita to their house to spend the night.Posted on August 2, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Claire, Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (1)

Back to the roots: our trip to Indonesia
This is how we started our journey back to our roots in Indonesia. On 22 July 1996, it would be 35 years ago that our parents got married. Mam always talked about going to Indonesia with the whole family and we always said: yeah, sure Ma, we'll do that some day. But this time we couldn't get out of it anymore, so we decided that from 31 July to 22 August, the 10 of us would all go to Indonesia: Papa and Mama, Jacques and Claire, Monique and her fiance Menno, Raimond and his friend Michel, Victor and his girlfriend Wanda.Posted on July 22, 1996 at 12:00 AM in Claire, Indonesia | Permalink| Comments (0)
